Our history

In March 1983 few medical laboratory expertise and consultant pathologists spearheaded by Mr. Satish Sudhakar met at the Pathology Department, Colonial War Memorial Hospital and formed an organization called the “Fiji Medical Laboratory Technologists Association” (FMLTA).

This was the birth of our first ever professional association. The first ever seminar was also held this year at the CWMH Antenatal clinic room.

Along the journey

In 2011 the proposed name was put forward to change the naming right of the association from FMLTA to Fiji Institute of Medical Laboratory Science (FIMLS) and was finally endorsed by the members in 2012. An interim committee was formed that will take FIMLS through this transition period.

These heroes displayed uncommon courage and foresight as they pursued not only career and welfare issues, but also to improve the standards, status, education and training of members of the profession.

FIMLS is a non profitable organisation that is funded entirely by membership dues and revenues from goods and services. Our members practice in hospital laboratories, private medical laboratories, public health laboratories, research and educational institutions.

With the inclusion of the phlebotomist, and the passing of the Allied Heath Practitioners (AHP) Bill, FIMLS has since then been growing from strength to strength.
